The Modern Classical Garden

By turning a difficult-to-access and sloped backyard into a series of functional terraces, this garden now provides plenty of space for a growing young family. The hardscape is organized along a central axis and provides a long view the back of the garden from the house. Even with the long view, screening trees and shrubs make sure there are surprises as one walks through the garden. The screening plants add structure and privacy while the lower plantings loosen up into playful drifts of foliage and overflowing flowers. The comfortable steps and level grades of the garden now allow easy access to different spaces including areas for active play, a hot tub, a playhouse and upper deck, the grilling and dining area and a lounging area with firepit.
